The People of Sierra Leone

“When asked ‘What experience had the deepest impact on you during your trip to Sierra Leone,’ the answer for me and the other Hosparus volunteers is simply ‘the people.’ From city dwellers to rural villagers, professionals to panhandlers, school children to shop owners… the respect and resiliency of these friendly and peaceful people never ceased to amaze us.”

Shepherd’s Hospice Sierra Leone

It’s difficult to imagine living in one of the poorest regions of the world with a disease that your friends and family — and even you — do not fully understand. But for the 49,000 people in Sierra Leone living with HIV, and the thousands of others with a life-threatening illness, it’s a painful reality.

With 70% of the country’s population living on less than $1 a day, these patients ask for very little… but there are things every terminal patient deserves. They need information about their diagnosis and what it means. They need to know how long they have, and what they may be capable of doing with their time. They need honesty and compassion from their caretakers. They need the Shepherd’s Hospice.
