The Country of Sierra Leone

A nation stricken with disease and poverty, and with nearly a third of the country unable to read, Sierra Leone has one of the lowest life expectancy rates in the world. A staggering 28% of infants born in Sierra Leone will die before they are five years old, and there are an estimated 15,000 orphaned and vulnerable children in the country. Seventy percent of the country’s population lives on less than $1 a day.

In 2010, a free government sponsored health care program was introduced in Sierra Leone. However, the national program only provides free care to pregnant women, lactating women and children under five — others must pay out of pocket for any health treatment they need. Patients with HIV, TB and other chronic illnesses face many other barriers to receiving health care as well. Long waiting periods, drug shortages and the inability of patients to travel to health care sites are all problems that a national health care system has been unable to address.

The Shepherd’s Hospice gives these patients what the government of Sierra Leone cannot — relief, comfort, compassion and hope. And they need your support to continue this important work.
