National Pain Policy

The Sierra Leone Association of Palliative Care has recently collaborated with the Pain and Policy Study Group, University of Wisconsin, to advocate for a national pain and palliative care policy that promotes access to opioid medicines for medical and research purposes. Under this policy, the Sierra Leone government would be required to:

  • Allocate a portion of the annual health and sanitation budget to cancer care
  • Allow specially trained nurses, midwives and Community Health Officers to prescribe opioid medicines, broadening the ability to provide palliative care
  • Make morphine available in District Hospitals so that rural patients who are in severe pain can access the medicine they need without undue delay and cost

In order to be a success, support for the National Pain Policy must be garnered within Sierra Leone. Please call your parliamentarian today and “talk pain” with him or her. Demand adequate pain management in every community hospital in Sierra Leone.
